Summer 2
Topic - Fur, Feathers and Scales
Soft fur, sharp claws and twitching whiskers. What’s your favourite animal? One that meows? One that barks? Or maybe one that scurries or slithers? From pets at home to animals in the zoo, let’s find out what animals like to eat and where they like to sleep. Do you know how to look after a rabbit? A cat? Or even a snake? Find out how the elephant got his trunk and how the rhinoceros got his leathery skin. Perhaps you know how the dog got his waggy tail? Can you make a food chain to show who eats who? Who is a herbivore and who is a carnivore? When a gaggle of mysterious pets arrive at the local pet shop, it’s up to you to take care of them. Feed them, clean them and discover their daily needs. After all that work, curl up and take a cat nap.

Ways to help at home
- Children must read their school reading book at least 4 times a week to a grown up at home. Books will only be changed when they have read their school book 3 or more times. Ensure you record this in their reading record. Only one read per day will be counted.
- We recommend www.whiteroseeducation.com/1-minute-maths for some fun one minute maths work.
- Our topic is all about animals. Here is a great webpage to learn more about animal classification at home: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z6882hv
- Please ask your child to find 3 interesting facts about an animal of their choice.
- Using toys can your child classify animals? Put them in baskets of the same type.
- In maths, we will be learning about fractions. There are some wonderful games on this website that you might like to have a go at: https://ictgames.com/mobilePage/fractions.html
- Visit a zoo or animal park and make a list of all of the human features (such as benches, pathways or carparks) you can see and how many physical features (such as trees, lakes, bushes etc) that you can see.
- Visit zoo or animal park and make a list of any animals you see there.
- Do a painting of an animal of your choice. Can you colour mix the correct colours?
- In school, we will be continuing to learn about doubles and halves. For example double 3 is 6, and half of 6 is 3. There is a fab game on https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-thebutton that you could go on to try doubling and halving at home. Just set it to doubles to 10.
- In phonics, we will be continuing to work on phase 5c phonics. There are lots of great ways to learn these phonemes (sounds) including: https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/5/buried-treasure
https://www.phonicsbloom.com/uk/game/odd-and-bob?phase=5
https://ictgames.com/mobilePage/forestPhonics/index.html
These will help support your child in preparation for the phonics screening check.
Last year the children were really lucky to have some animal visitors come into school for this animal topic. If you have any friendly, unusual or willing pets that you would be able to bring into school, we would love to have them in as it really helps to bring our topic to life. Please email your child’s teacher
if you would like to bring a pet into school.
