Relationships and Health

At Portway we believe that all children should form positive and meaningful relationships with their peers and adults. We understand the importance of teaching our children to learn to lead a healthy lifestyle through focusing on: what we eat, exercising regularly, establishing good sleeping routines, teeth and hygiene, sun safety, understanding the correct use of medicines, online safety, being safe with strangers and maintaining a good mental health.

After carefully reviewing our PSHE curriculum, teaching and the needs of our children we have decided to spend the first six weeks of the Autumn Term focusing on the PSHE topic of 'Settling into our classes.' During this topic we explore Relationships with each other, being a good friend: including being kind, sharing, loneliness and embedding rules and expectations that we all need to follow.

We understand that our feelings play a huge part in how we interact with others.  Each class has a Zone's of Regulation Station in their classroom.  Each child has a photo of themselves that they can move to each area to show how they are feeling at any given time.  The four main coloured areas are:

Blue Zone:
Sad
Bored
Tired
Sick

Green Zone:
Happy
Focused
Calm
Proud

Yellow Zone:
Worried
Frustrated
Silly
Excited

Red Zone:
Overjoyed/Elated
Panicked
Angry
Terrified

We regularly discuss each child's feelings and they love discussing how they can change how they feel in the most positive way.

We all thoroughly enjoyed celebrating this years National Relationships and Health Day in July - we loved discussing how we all 'sparkle' in different ways.  It was great exploring all of our differences.

We learn lots in Anti- Bullying week each year too.  Our children absolutely love Odd Socks Day!
