Long term plan
Term - Summer 2
Topic - 'On the Beach' and 'Moving On'
This topic teaches children about the plants and animals that live at the seaside. It also explores holidays in the past and the importance of keeping safe in the Sun.
We will also celebrate the children’s successes throughout their Reception year. We will explore how they have grown and changed and support them with the changes to come as they move into Year 1.
Maths - We are teaching the children how to use a rekenrek, identifying number bonds using the red and white beads. We will secure their knowledge of addition and subtraction asking the children to record their answers.
Literacy - We are reading the non-fiction book ''The Snail and the Whale" This book will link very well to our topic about exploring the seaside.
Our poem is called 'Take me to the Ocean'. We cannot wait to learn and perform this.
Phonics - We are learning phase 4 within our phonics scheme. There are no new graphemes to learn, but 16 more common exception words. In phase 4 we will be teaching the children to read longer words and multi-syllabic words, while embedding our previously taught phase 3 graphemes.
Term - Summer 1
Topic - 'Big Wide World' and 'Splash'
This topic teaches children about the global community to which they belong and explores how living things, communities and climates differ around the world.
We will also be teaching the children about water, including floating and sinking, freezing and melting, and why it is important for living things to stay hydrated.
Maths - We are teaching the children how to use a 10's frame and the notion of '5 and a bit' making numbers up to 10. We are also exploring part part whole methods, understanding that 7 is made up of 5 and 2.
Literacy - We are reading the books 'Going on a Bear Hunt' and 'Where the Wild things are'. These books will link very well to our topic about exploring journey's.
Our poem is called 'African Animals'. We cannot wait to learn and perform this.
Phonics - We are learning phase 4 within our phonics scheme. There are no new graphemes to learn, but 12 more common exception words. In phase 4 we will be teaching the children to read longer words and multi-syllabic words, while embedding our previously taught phase 3 graphemes.
Term - Spring 2
Topic - 'Dangerous Dinosaurs' and 'Puddles and Rainbows'
This exciting topic teaches children about the different animals that roamed Earth millions of years ago and how they are related to animals that live on Earth today. We are teaching the children about the weather that happens during spring and allows them to explore natural phenomena, including rainbows. It supports them to explore colour in the natural world.
Maths - We are teaching the children how to compare lengths using practical items from around the classroom. We will be doubling with numbers up to 10, comparing odd and even numbers, counting on from a given number and learning how to find all the ways we can make 5.
Literacy - We are reading the book 'Handa's Surprise' which is about a girl who lives in Kenya. We will be generating new vocabulary and writing sentences linked to African animals and exotic fruit tasting. Our poem will be called 'Dinosaur, Dinosaur'. We cannot wait to learn and perform this.
Phonics - We are revisiting phase 3 mastery lesson within our unlocking letters and sounds scheme. We will be applying phase 3 graphemes within sentences to read and write.
Term - Spring 1
Topic - Starry Night and Winter Wonderland
This topic explores the differences in the world at night compared to during the day. It teaches children about the importance of a good night’s sleep, and helps them to discover what is happening in the world while they are sleeping, including finding out about nocturnal animals.
It also teaches children about the changes that happen during winter, including the types of weather associated with winter. It also explores places that have snow all year round and the types of animals that live there.
Maths - We are teaching the children how to subitise to 6 showing different arrangements. We are also teaching the composition of a number. For example, knowing what numbers make up 5. All maths is very practical and fun through lots of rhymes and talk.
Literacy - We are reading the book 'Penguins' which is a non-fiction text about Penguins living in Antarctica. Our second book is called 'Lost and Found', this books explores the concept of habitats and friendship.
Phonics - We are revisiting phase 3 within our unlocking letters and sounds scheme. We will be applying phase 3 graphemes within sentences to read and write.
