Miss Brown - Outstanding Owls

Long term plan

FOREST SCHOOL and PE

Our forest school session will be taught every Monday morning and PE will be taught every Tuesday morning.

Summer 2

Topic: New Beginnings and At the Seaside

This topic teaches children about the plants and animals that live at the seaside. It also explores holidays in the past and the importance of keeping safe in the Sun.

We will also celebrate the children’s successes throughout their Reception year. We will explore how they have grown and changed and support them with the changes to come as they move into Year 1.

Through our topic work this term we will be learning …….

  • Maths - We are teaching the children how to use a rekenrek, identifying number bonds using the red and white beads. We will secure their knowledge of addition and subtraction asking the children to record their answers.
  • Phonics – We will be starting our phase 4 mastery block within our phonics scheme. We will be teaching the children to read longer words and multi-syllabic words while embedding our previously taught phase 3 graphemes. We will recap on the 16 new common exception words.
  • Write Stuff – Our write stuff unit book is ‘The Snail and the Whale’. This will link in well with our seaside topic. Our poem is called ‘Take me to the Ocean’. We will recite this poem by heart.
  • PE – We are applying the skills of jump, balance and coordination to move around obstacle courses and gymnastic equipment
  • PSHE (Personal Social Health Emotional) - Growing up great; we are learning about ‘Growing Up and Moving On’
  • History - Past and present; we are learning seaside towns from the past and present. We will be creating a timeline to show our journey throughout foundation
  • Science and Geography - Understanding the world; we are learning about rockpools, seashore creatures, how to protect the seas and oceans, coral reefs, icy seas and treasure maps
  • RE - People and communities; which stories are special to Christians
  • Art, Music and Design Technology - Expressive arts and design; in DT we are learning to sew in textiles and in music we are working our way through the Charanga block ‘Big Bear Funk!’ and ‘Reflect, Rewind and Replay’

Forest School - Gardening and Mindfulness

  • Weeding, watering, harvesting
  • Mindfulness
  • Rubbish collecting
  • Recycled art
  • Trip to Allestree park

Ways to help at home

  • Children must read their school reading book at least 4 times a week to a grown up at home. Books will only be changed when they have read their school book 3 or more times. Ensure you record this in their reading record.
  • We recommend you watch the phonics videos at home that teachers send home each week. This will support their learning in school and help them to ‘keep up’ each week.
  • We are learning to add and subtract using a tens frame up to 10. We will be learning to read, solve and record answers. We will also focus on number formation.
  • We will be learning some number bonds to 10. This is a fun song to help the children learn some by rote https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJBBaETaElI
  • In science, we are learning about rock pools. We will be reading Clem and Crab, The book can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LbFaK69m2w

Can you make a list of all the things you may find in a rock pool? You could create a collage rock pool using a shoe box!

  • In Geography, we are learning about maps and routes. Can you create a simple map from your house to the park? What do you see on the way? Houses, shops, roads etc
  • In PSHE we are learning about growing, comparing humans and plants. Can you look at some baby photos and order them from baby to child? Can you look after a plant at home and talk about what the plant needs to survive?
